If you have ever wanted to play a musical instrument of some sort yet somehow never managed to find the time, and the guitar is the instrument you long to play, then you are not alone.  Thankfully, learning to play the guitar is actually not that difficult once you understand how a guitar works and can get to grips with the way guitar music is written.

There are two choices of guitar, the acoustic guitar and the electric guitar, and beginning guitar lessons with either starts off in exactly the same way.

Obviously you need to start by getting a guitar to learn on.  An older acoustic one can be fairly cheap and is equally suited to those who will switch to an electric guitar once they have picked up the basics.  Before you can even think about actually playing your guitar, you should spend time practicing holding this new instrument as initially it could feel quite strange.  They are bulkier than you may think, and it is important that you hold it regularly so that you feel natural holding it and not awkward in anyway.

The next step is to learn the notes of each string. There are 6 of them, all of which when playing with other people would need to be tuned, so learning how to tune your guitar is a good step too, as is overall familiarization of your instrument.  Put your guitar face up on your lap so that you can learn the order of the strings.  The furthest string from you is called E and so is the string nearest to you, just that they are an octave apart.
